Initiative-specific development wave

How this draft was developed

These sources support general principles for professional connection, peer development and proportionate handling of personal information; they do not constitute Rotary International or Office of the Australian Information Commissioner endorsement of the named Career Path Conversations initiative or this locally designed delivery model.

Primary references consulted

  • Deliver Continued Value (Rotary International)
Used for: Rotary encourages clubs to offer professional connections, mentoring, leadership development and skill-building.; Member value may include opportunities to showcase vocational skills and connect with community leaders.
  • Rotary Clubs (Rotary International)
Used for: Rotary describes club membership as a way to meet community leaders and develop leadership and professional skills through participation.; The club setting combines relationships, service and skill development rather than operating as an employment service.
  • Chapter 3: APP 3 Collection of solicited personal information (Office of the Australian Information Commissioner)
Used for: APP 3 requires relevant organisations to collect personal information only where reasonably necessary and by lawful and fair means.; Data minimisation, direct collection and informed, voluntary and specific consent are important when handling personal and sensitive information.

Candidate District material consulted

These records remain draft evidence and still need a human source decision.

  • Club Playbook - Theme 2
Related draft principle only: using a light skills-and-interests prompt to connect members with mentors or pathways. The candidate contains no literal Career Path Conversations record and does not supply this draft's privacy, conflict or professional-advice controls.

Theme 2 source-assurance wave

What has been checked

  • 3 current primary pages used by this guide were reopened on 9 August 2026.
  • 6 attributed source claim(s) were mapped to their bounded use in this initiative.
  • Candidate District material remains separate and does not establish this result.

  • Deliver Continued Value
Supports: The 49 attributed Theme 2 claims attached to this source, limited to the implementation elements and supporting documents named in each initiative-level claim mapping.
Does not establish: That the initiative is endorsed by Rotary International or District 9510, that it is permitted by the club's governing documents, that members want it, that it suits the local club, or that it will achieve the intended outcome.
  • Rotary clubs
Supports: The 12 attributed Theme 2 claims attached to this source, limited to the implementation elements and supporting documents named in each initiative-level claim mapping.
Does not establish: That the initiative is endorsed by Rotary International or District 9510, that it is permitted by the club's governing documents, that members want it, that it suits the local club, or that it will achieve the intended outcome.
  • Chapter 3: APP 3 Collection of solicited personal information
Supports: Data-minimisation, collection-purpose, proportionality and consent safeguards where the Privacy Act and APP 3 apply.
Does not establish: Whether a particular Rotary club is an APP entity or whether a proposed renewal survey, diagnostic or member record is lawful in its actual circumstances.

What still needs a person to confirm

  • Confirm the member, prospective-member, past-member and community needs, preferences and consent that the local design assumes.
  • Confirm which privacy, safeguarding, incorporated-association, charity, work health and safety, food, liquor, copyright, licensing, screening and other duties apply to the club and the activity.
  • Test accessibility, cultural safety, belonging, language and alternative participation routes with affected people and recognise First Nations cultural authority rather than inferring suitability from the guide.
  • Confirm every local fact, starting point, cost, role, current service contact, measure, stopping condition and platform capability before the club decides to proceed.
  • Confirm the authority and current scope of each primary source, resolve login-gated or moved-page references and keep any candidate District material attributed and unapproved until its source decision is made.

The source-verification release gate remains closed.

Checks still on hold

Still an internal draft: source interpretation, local suitability, accessibility, governance and editorial approval remain open checks.

1. Is this worth trying here?

What we hope will change: Use Career Path Conversations to make mentoring and personal development easier to find, choose and sustain.

2. Our 90-day try-out

1Invite members to submit one career or vocational question and the kind of perspective they would value, explaining what the club will collect, who will see it and when it will be removed.Career conversation coordinatorThree weeks before matchingA consented request with a clear question and minimal personal information
2Identify possible conversation partners based on relevant experience rather than status, and ask each person to disclose conflicts, commercial interests and limits.Career conversation coordinatorTwo weeks before the conversationA shortlist of suitable, conflict-checked peers or a referral decision
3Offer the proposed match privately to both people, share only the agreed question and let either person decline, request a different match or choose no conversation.Career conversation coordinatorOne to two weeks before the conversationA mutually accepted match and agreed format

3. Checks before we start

Things our club needs to check
QuestionWhat it means for usWho will checkDone?
Check the idea with the people affected and confirm its purpose, owner and practical limits before putting it into use.
Protect member choice and privacy, make participation accessible, and do not infer belonging or satisfaction from attendance alone.
A member uses the conversation to recruit, sell, seek clients or create an obligation to return a favour. — Prohibit commercial solicitation, require conflicts to be declared and provide a private concern and rematch route managed by the coordinator.
Experience is presented as professional advice or a promise that an employer, industry or contact will act. — Use experience-sharing language, require independent verification and refer legal, financial, health, employment and other specialist questions to qualified help.
The club collects detailed career history, goals or contacts and reuses them beyond the matching purpose. — Collect the minimum directly from the member, state the purpose and retention period, restrict access and seek specific consent before any introduction or secondary use.
Members with prestigious occupations or existing networks receive better matches and follow-up. — Match to the question and relevant experience, record unmatched requests, offer district or external routes and review access patterns without ranking participants.
The club must approve the no-recruitment, no-selling, conflict, privacy, referral and complaint boundaries before collecting member requests.
Conversation partners must not imply professional accreditation, employer authority, endorsement, confidentiality beyond the club process or a guaranteed opportunity.
The coordinator must define who can see requests, how consented introductions work and when identifiable records will be removed.
Any issue involving employment rights, discrimination, health, wellbeing, legal, financial or other regulated advice must be referred to an appropriate independent service.

4. What changed?

What we will keep an eye on
What mattersWhere we are nowWhat we hope to seeHow we will checkWho
After 90 days, review Career Path Conversations. Look for suitable matches, regular check-ins and progress against goals chosen by the participating member.
Requests matched, referred or closed with the participant informed, rather than left waiting or informally circulated.
Matches accepted voluntarily by both people after conflicts and conversation limits are disclosed.
Participants who report a clearer question, a verified option or a self-chosen next step after 30 days.
Matching records removed on schedule, with no unconsented referral, recruitment use or commercial follow-up reported.

After 30 days

Is it reaching the right people? Is anything unsafe, unfair or harder than expected?

After 60 days

Make one useful change based on what people have told you.

After 90 days

Compare with where you started. Decide whether to change it, continue it or stop.

Before your club says yes

Does the idea fit?

Talk with the people it is meant to serve and check that the need is real.

Who can say yes?

Name the person or group that can approve the work, spending and any safety arrangements.

Are people protected?

Check privacy, consent and safety. Collect only the information you genuinely need.

Can everyone take part?

Check the language, format, place, technology and cost for barriers.

Are the facts and permissions right?

Check names, claims, images, quotations, partner references and Rotary branding.

How will we learn?

Note where things stand now, check in at 30, 60 and 90 days, and decide what to do next.
